Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin

About Charité

The Charité represents a university hospital with more than 100 clinical departments & research institutes and more than 1.3 million in- and out-patients per year. The Charité Rheumatology Department is among the largest university-based clinics in Germany providing a service of integrated management to treat patients suffering from different rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The department currently represents a fully equipped clinical and research institution consisting of a 26-bed ward and a day care clinic with 18 beds (where about 1000 in-patients are being treated per year), an out-patient clinic (where about 4000 out-patients are being treated per year), a study unit (with currently > 30 ongoing studies), a rheumatological routine service laboratory and several research laboratories. There is a close scientific collaboration with the Deutsche Rheumaforschungszentrum (German Rheumatism Research Center; DRFZ) in order to develop causative and curative therapeutic strategies and regenerative therapies.

The Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery at the Charité is comprised of the Orthopaedic Clinic and the Clinic for Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery. The CMSC is tightly interlinked with the newly founded “Julius Wolff Institute” at the Charité. Part of the largest University clinic in Europe, the Center with all three institutions covers the entire spectrum of modern orthopaedic, trauma and reconstructive surgery. Both the clinical and experimental research is focused on musculoskeletal diseases and their origins, in particular bone and soft tissue regeneration. Sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Julius Wolff Institute and the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery are a collaborative research center (SFB 760) that focuses on the biological healing processes, as well as the analysis of general mechanical conditions during healing and potential factors that accelerate such processes. The Center has specific expertise in measuring and characterising the internal loading conditions in the musculoskeletal tissues of the human lower limb.
